| The Island of Dr.
Moreau (released in 1996) is a guilty pleasure of mine.
It's certainly not the best film ever made. I read in
Entertainment Weekly magazine that it's becoming a cult classic.
This is the third film adaptation
of the H.G. Welles novel (The
Island of Lost Souls in 1933 starred Charles Laughton, and
The Island of Dr.
Moreau in 1977 starred Burt Lancaster).
Unfortunately, for the most part, this version is not a good
film. However, there are plenty of unintentional laughs in
the film that keep me coming back over and over again.
One weekend, a cable movie channel
aired the film late on a Saturday night and I found it while
channel surfing. I kept promising myself I'd stop watching
after a certain moment, then after another certain moment, and
then after still another certain moment, and I ended up staying up
to watch the entire thing. The next day, when I turned on
the television, it was still on the same channel and the movie was
airing again, and, I confess, I watched it again. It's just
funny, I can't explain it any better than that. My favorite
scene is when Marlon Brando has Fairuza Balk put ice in his hat to
cool him down. You have to see it to believe it. |
