While working on this website, I watched Midnight Cowboy for the first time in many years.  The film has held up for me.  Dustin Hoffman's performances as Rico "Ratso" Rizzo is incredible.  Unfortunately for Mr. Hoffman, he was nominated for an Academy Award in the same category as his co-star, Jon Voight, Richard Burton for Anne of a Thousand Days, one of my favorite actors, Peter O'Toole in Goodbye Mr. Chips, and John Wayne is True Grit.  John Wayne took home the Academy Award.

It's hard to believe that this film was ever rated X (now NC-17).  It would barely get an R rating now but, for 1969, it was rated X and remains the only X-rated film to be awarded an Academy Award.  Academy Awards were also presented to John Schlesinger for best director and Waldo Salt's screenplay, adapted from James Leo Herlihy's book.  It's story of friendship between two unlikely allies who are both societal misfits.  It's still a great film
