It's hard to believe
that A Clockwork Orange was rated X for mature audiences
only when it was released in 1971. The sex and violence in the film seem so tame today.
The X rating was
replaced by NC-17 the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America)
many years later and the rating for this film was changed to
R.
After thirty years,
this film remains quite the strong statement concerning the
ambivalence of youth and the degradation of social
structures. I had read Anthony Burgess's book before seeing
the film and actually learned to understand the bastardized
language used by Alex and the Droogs in the film.
Frequently, films made
of books that I've read don't live up to the visualizations I
created when reading. This one did. Stanley Kubrick
was one of the really great film directors, and the music by Wendy
Carlos added so much to the atmosphere.
